Missoula Distractions and Cell Phone Laws

March 23, 2020

In 2016, the Missoula City Council passed a law that banned all cell phone use while driving. There was already a law that banned texting and talking while driving. The law that was recently passed now forbid all cell phone use. However, you can still use hands-free devices while you are driving.

The city council is hoping that this law will cut down on car accidents. It is estimated that 25 percent of car accidents are caused by cell phones. One of the reasons that cell phones contribute to accidents is because they are a distraction. Many people believe that they can multitask. However, it is nearly impossible to multitask while you are driving.

Being distracted for two seconds can lead to an accident. You may not be able to brake in time to avoid an accident if you are using your cell phone while you are driving. You may also not see another person pull out in front of you.

Even though the Missoula City Council did not ban hands-free devices, they can still be a distraction. In fact, some studies suggest that using a hands-free device while driving is just as distracting as holding a cell phone. Anything that diverts your attention away from driving will increase your chance of getting into an accident.
